Silverliner III #238
About Silverliner III no. 238
Silverliner III #238, built in 1967 for the Pennsylvania Railroad, is the last surviving car of its class after 45 years of service with PRR, Penn Central, and SEPTA before being retired in 2012.
Initially set aside for preservation but without a permanent home, the car was sent for scrapping in 2023; however, logistical issues delayed its destruction.
In 2025, Sullivan’s Scrap Metals recognized its historical value and donated it to Northeast Rail Heritage Inc. (NRH), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. NRH now plans to cosmetically restore the car in its 1990s “Yellowbird” livery and is seeking volunteers and support to preserve the car and share the story of the Silverliner fleet’s role in Philadelphia-area commuter life.
Silverliner III #238 — the last of its kind — has been saved from scrapping and donated to Northeast Rail Heritage Inc., which now hopes to restore it to its historic “Yellowbird” appearance so future generations can learn from its legacy. We’re seeking donations and volunteers to support this preservation effort—if you can help, please reach out and join the team working to save this important piece of Philadelphia’s rail history.
